Tomahawk Throwing
Tomahawk throwing employs the same stance and follow through as knife throwing.
But throwers should be aware that the weight of the hawk is at one end only, unlike knives. Be prepared for it taking a bit more effort and control to throw the hawk. Plus, invariably, as it is heavier, your first few throws will be low on the target. Just mentally adjust your expected point of impact on the target.
The grip is shown below. Hold it just like a hammer grip.
For a consistent grip hold the end of the handle or mark the handle so you can hold it from the same spot. As with all throwing you are trying to acheive the most consistent throw. If you alter the length of handle you throw your distance from the target will always be altering.
Most of the tomahawks that can be bought in the UK have a handle length of 18″. Most throwers will need to stand about 15-16′ for one spin.
Most tomahawks employ a tapered handle which makes it ideal for absorbing bad knocks as the head of the hawk just falls away from the handle. If axes are used they have a fixed head and, usually , this results in a split handle.
